Pupil Premium 2012-13The Pupil Premium for 2012-13 is allocated to local authorities and schools with pupils on roll in January 2012 that are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years. Each of these pupils will attract £600. Schools will have the freedom to spend the Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils. We urge schools and local authorities to encourage parents to register their child as eligible for FSM so that each school receives their maximum Pupil Premium entitlement.
We will continue to provide the Pupil Premium for children in care who have been looked after continuously for at least six months.
We will also continue to provide a Premium for children of parents in the armed services, who face particular challenges. The level of this Service Child premium will be £250 in 2012-13.
The Service Premium is a strand of the Pupil Premium paid to schools in respect of children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. For 2012-13 schools with service children are receiving £250 for every child listed as a service child in the January 2012 school census.
The Service Premium is paid for children of currently serving armed forces personnel so children of parents who are no longer in the armed forces, including those injured or killed in action, would lose eligibility. To ensure this does not happen we are putting in place new arrangements in 2012-13 to ensure that children eligible for the Service Premium in 2011-12 who would not otherwise be eligible in 2012-13, continue to be counted. Longer term the intention is to extend eligibility in the coming years so that Service children will retain eligibility for the Service Premium for up to six years.
Schools will receive revised Service Premium allocations when Pupil Premium allocations for 2012-13 are finalised in July, as soon as the pupil numbers in the January 2012 school census numbers are confirmed.
