Update on the incentive package to encourage teachers to work in schools in challenging circumstances launched in February 2009
The New Opportunities programme is now closed and the Department for Education will not accept any new schools wishing to participate in the programme.
This note provides guidance for schools already participating in the programme.
ASTs
Schools currently participating in the programme which have already created Advanced Skills Teachers (AST) posts will be paid the Department’s share of AST costs for the agreed period. Schools participating in the programme should not engage any new ASTs unless they are in a position to provide funding as these will not be subsidised by this programme.
Golden Handcuffs
This provision is now closed to new applicants. Schools have already been advised that no new Handcuffs should be offered to teachers starting later than 31 March 2011. The Department will honour agreed funding commitments.
