This section provides information about statutory induction for newly qualified teachers (NQTs) in England and provides links to the new induction regulations and statutory guidance which came into force on 1 September 2012. A new appropriate body to quality assure the induction of NQTs will be established from 1 September 2013. The National Induction Panel for Teachers (NIPT) has been developed by Freedom and Autonomy for Schools - National Association (FASNA) and the Independent Academies Association (IAA). NIPT will act as appropriate body for NQT induction in Academies and maintained schools. The statutory guidance will be updated from September 2013 to reflect this.

The appeals body for induction with effect from 1 April 2013 is the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
Qualified teachers who are employed in maintained schools, non-maintained special schools, maintained nursery schools and pupil referral units in England must, by law, complete an induction period (unless they are covered by any of the exemptions in Annex B of the statutory guidance) after gaining qualified teacher status (QTS).
In autumn 2011 we consulted on proposals to change the arrangements for the induction of newly qualified teachers (NQT) in order to reduce unnecessary prescription and bureaucracy, and give schools and appropriate bodies flexibility to use their professional judgement in managing their own arrangements according to local circumstances.
New Induction Regulations (The Education (Induction Arrangements for School Teachers) (England) Regulations 2012) and associated statutory guidance (Induction for newly qualified teachers (England) (amended) December 2012) came into force on 1 September 2012.

From 1 September 2012 the new Teachers’ Standards replace the QTS and Core Standards for all assessment evidence on or after 1 September 2012.
