Following the successful launch events and distribution to all local authorities (LAs) and diocesan boards, the 'Taking the Chair' materials are now available online. This skills-based training programme is the first of two training programmes that together form the National Development Project for Chairs of Governing Bodies and Headteachers. The second programme from the project, 'Leading together' is also available online.

It is targeted at prospective and new chairs and vice-chairs of governing bodies and committees who wish to develop their confidence and skills, and experienced chairs keen to review their effectiveness in the role.

The programme uses a variety of learning approaches and emphasis the practical application of knowledge and skills.

To complement the programme, 'Taking the Chair' is available as a facilitator handbook and as a stand-alone distance-learning pack.

It is recommended those embarking on the distance-learning programme contact their LA’s governor services teams for assistance and advice.

Copies of the distance learning pack and facilitator toolkit are available online or can be ordered from the Department School Governance Team by email.
