This section describes the system for regulating the teaching profession and the process for dealing with cases of serious misconduct leading to potential prohibition of teachers from the profession. Operated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership , on behalf of the Secretary of State, this process does not cover cases of teacher incompetence, as they should be dealt with at a local level by the headteacher or school governors.

This information will be of interest to:

  • Employers of teachers (including employment and supply agencies), to help them decide whether an allegation of teacher misconduct is sufficiently serious to be referred to the National College for Teaching and Leadership;
  • Teachers, to help them understand the potential consequences of serious misconduct;

Members of the public may also find the information on this website helpful if they consider an allegation of serious misconduct should be referred after pursuing it fully at a local level;
