Evidence shows that there can be a ‘dip’ in performance for pupils as they transfer from primary school to secondary school. Pupils falling behind at this stage sometimes never catch up.
We also know that students eligible for free school meals regularly underperform compared to their peers, with attainment gaps widening as they progress through school.
Summer schools offer a specific intervention at this crucial stage of education to help prevent these young people from falling behind.
The department is asking schools to share data on pupils who have attended summer schools.
